We’re very excited about this. The concept is simple and genius – Spiro, the famous Playstation dragon, has discovered a magical country with many strange and wondrous creatures, and much adventuring and brawling can be expected. Where this product really excels is in the design department, specifically the way the game handles stating, world expansion, and collectibles. See, all those cute and memorable citizens of the Skylands are also collectible toys with embedded RF chips, and they remember their stats, grow more powerful with each battle, and when you place the toy on the game-controller pedestal, the character renders in the video game world perfectly.

Activision has partnered with Toys R Us to manufacture these little gold nuggets. Kids love toys. Kids love video games. Kids love capturing endangered animals and making them battle each other. Where can it go wrong?

With this line, the world of collectible toys and video games are merging, but it’s not the first time we’ve seen this. From Heroclix combining our love of superheroes, toys, superhero-toys, and war gaming – to D&D questionable full-step move to the miniature gaming market.

With so many gaming companies moving to the “virtual monthly subscription” model for digital content gaming, this is a very deliberate counter-move that promises to be hugely successful. At least, that’s what we at Particularly Evil are hoping.

There are three reasons for this post:

1. To ask if you’re excited about Dexcon yet?

2. To mention that a new summer game might be added for this (or next) week.

3. To mention that, once again, we the wonderful Storytellers at Particularly Evil had one of our amazing plot-lines torn from one of our games and thrust upon the silver screen!

That’s right – I’m talking about the Golden Army:

*Spoilers for the new Hellboy Movie after the break*

So, those of you that have already seen the new Hellboy sequel are already aware that in this movie, our favorite red meanie faces off against Elves and their unstoppable Golden Army. What few of you may know is that a similar plotline was in effect in Ardna since the Spring of 2004, when the Ivory Tower fell and the Elvish Homelands were turned to ash. The defloration (both actual and metaphysical) of the Great Wood revealed many strange hollow trees, each filled with a glorious articulated suit of armor – made of Dwarf steel and Elven craft. They first appeared in a Elven Campaign story arc that featured a merry band of halflings trying to help with the elven relief effort, a captured and freed elven druid, and a grumpy Great Griffin with more attitude then a thousand drunken goblin sailors all with raging cases of strintack. It was a great game, but it ultimately came to a climax before anything of the history of the strange armor/golems was revealed.

A year later our Storyteller Matthew Krebaum took over the reigns of the plot, and again the mysteries behind the Sleeping Elven Army remained hidden – as elf turned against elf and the ruin of the Tower was made all the worse.

Early this summer I once again began to reach into this story arc with Tom Pheasant’s character, Leo. In a series of email games (that will soon migrate over to our website), we followed a thread of Leo’s past, discovering how the Elven Warlock became the tool of evil forces, and just what heinous deeds he agreed to before escaping from the ruins of the Elven Homeland.

I’m happy to announce that Ardna will re-visit this old story arc in supplements published on our website in the coming weeks. Like Hearts and Minds, this game tool will be available for free to our loyal players.

Well, I guess what they say is true. You can’t keep a good idea all to yourself.
